I'm a newbie and have some questions. First a little background:

I was very excited to get into the VPN game and was trying to get a VPN to work with the Windows XP Pro VPN client:

Windows XP VPN Server -> Switch -> Router -> DSL Modem -> Internet <- Cable Modem <- Windows XP Pro VPN Client.

After messing with port 1723 and doing a million things, nothing worked for my Linksys WRT54G Wireless Router and now I'm using a Belkin Wireless Router. The only way VPN can connect is if I DMZ the VPN Server which is a big no-no.

What I want to do now is get a Router that 100% works with VPN. I want a router that supports multiple VPN connections. Do you have any that you guys can recommend in the $80-$150 range? I'm just going to get a wireless access point - I figure wireless routers are in their infancy and are not robust enough.

And furthermore; the VPN is exclusively for sharing files, which Windows XP Pro VPN is decent at, but it is very limited. Can you recommend a VPN host/client package I can look into?

Many people have reported they have a difficulty to setup WRT54G VPN. I think befvp41 and fvs318 are good.

In fact this afternoon I did pick up a WRV54G and I did the fix that you discussed in a previous forum to change the protocol(6) and (17) to (47). I can't believe Linksys can't get VPN port forwarding on their BROADBAND VPN ROUTER to work.

Do you know what the deal is with the 50 VPN tunnels? The instructions are very very vague.

I hope Linksys will eventually upgrade their firmware so we don't need a workaround to get teh VPN port forwarding to work.

And I feel like I just paid $220 to get the WRV54G and it's not a very robust router. Any other suggestions?

Unfortunately I've not actually ever used the WRV54G so I don't think I'm the right person to ask.

Linksys and Linksys support leave a lot to be desired. You could probably throw a dart at a name on this board and find a more qualified person to talk to.

With my unit (the RV082) 50 VPN tunnels means just that... 50 seperate IPSec tunnels for LAN to LAN and Client to LAN VPN tunnels. The RV082 also supports 2 group VPN connections.

I must admit I'm not very happy with my RV082's either. They didn't work that well out of the box and I've had to hack away at the units to get them to run stable. I'm thinking of looking at a couple of Pix units.

I'll I can say is good luck and post back if you have anything new.

Furthermore, Zyxel Tech supoport answers your e-mail.

They stuck with me and solved one of my problems graciously, (even though the cause of the problem was my own lack of knowledge).
