Using a Linksys WPC54G network adapter on a Toshiba Satellite laptop. Router is also Linksys to which the laptop and another computer connect to. This past week I've been trying to make the laptop wireless. I've ran through the Linksys Easy Connect and it says my system is okay, no problems. Here's what happens though:

Everytime the computer is restarted it unchecks the "let windows configure this automatically" tab. (XP home w/ SP2) So the windows wireless disabled button is in the task bar along with the Linksys program. The Linksys program says there's 75% signal but just won't connect, it just tries and tries but never does anything. Then I'll switch over to the automatic windows configuration after closing the Linksys app. It will find the network but will only have one bar for signal strength and will try to connect but fail. It tells me to repair the connection but this does nothing.

I've recorded everything on the router and other windows, here's what stands out to me:

The LAN is configured at 192.168.1.x but the WAN is configured on the router as 66.140.87.35 is this normal? The MAC addresses all read 0 and in the wireless tab the "Station MAC Filter" is disabled. Also the BLOCK WAN button in the router app is on disabled. Static Routing is set to LAN. Working mode is in Gateway, not router. It's an OPEN system.

I just list these above things because I'm not sure what changing them would do, if anything. I've setup plenty of wireless networks before but never had so much trouble... Oh and the Media State for the Wireless card in the IPCONFIG window is "MEDIA DISCONNECTED" even though XP recognizes the card is in the laptop, an icon appears... but the LINK light never comes on on the actual network adapter hardware.... Though last week I got it to connect but it wouldn't do anything, just one bar of signal and nothing else.

Sorry this is so long, I've tried to organize it somewhat. Any help would be appreciated, I might be able to figure this out on my own but I don't have time to toy with it much. It's volunteer work for a local church / private school and the computers they want worked on are only available to fix for an hour after the kids' school ends... So again, any help at all would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

Either you use XP's wireless zero configuration service, or you use the Linksys client software and disable the native wireless service for XP in Administrative Tools, Services.

That particular adapter works perfectly well with the native XP wireless zero configuration service. If it was my choice, I would remove the Linksys client software including the version of Funk Odyssey included, which was not intended for installation of XP clients.

I spent a couple of weeks on this one. It's pretty easy to fix.

Uninstall the Linksys software
shut down
remove the wireless card
boot up without the card
install the Linksys software (without the card)
shut down
insert the card
start up and go through the install process

Letting Windows handle installing the card (even though it correctly identifies it) causes some sort of problem. Having the Linksys software installed first seems to fix it. Also, I had problems after installing the "update" driver for the network card from Windows Update. I'd avoid it.

I'm running a Linksys Wireless-B 2.4 ghz card connecting to a Linksys 2.4 ghz Wireless Network Access Portal. I get IP addresses but they are way out of range. I am inside a company's network. Every wireless laptop doesn't connect. This used to work some time before, but stopped. The initial DNS server is gone and had to reconnect to a backup. Any ideas if the above post by cclyde311 will work? Keep in mind that sometimes these laptops are used outside the company.
