Recently I have had a problem with my PC that has prevented me from accessing the Internet. Luckily I have another PC, an old Pentium, that I have turned to so that I can operate my email and also search the net to find some clues to help fix my PC. I have had the Pentium for a couple of years, and I have always had the resolutiom set to maximum (1024 x 768 pixels) so that I could see as much as possible on the 15 inch screen. The tiny hard drive was nearly full and I quickly ran out of space so I began looking around for files I could delete to enable me to continue downloading web pages (it still has a number of files left by the previous owner). I found a 9 MB folder titled Netscape, and since Netscape was not installed, I decided to delete it. I went first to Add/Remove Programs and it wasn't there so I just deleted the folder. This enabled me to carry on downloading for a while until a little later, when I restarted the PC for some reason. It stopped booting at the DOS screen and the message was along the lines that Windows was looking for a program referred to in the registry that did not exist. It gave me two options, one was to reinstall the program, and the other I can't remember (it was during the early hours of the morning so I wasn't at my most alert) but it was something that was beyond my knowledge or ability to do at the time. Anyway, I was able to get it booted up but the display was in minimum resolution. I assumed it had booted up into safe mode, so that I could sort out the problem. I managed to download Netscape Navigator and installed it, then rebooted. However, the display stayed in minimum resolution (640 x 480 pixels and 16 colours).
The video adapter listed is Matrox MGA Mystique. I checked with Microsoft's driver updates and it appears that the installed driver is the latest (4.10.1998) available for this screen resolution. The PC is a Pentium 150 running Win98. What I can't understand is if the video adapter is only VGA, then how did it perform like an SVGA since I have had it (and while the previous owner had it for that matter, although she didn't have it set at the highest resolution), right up until last night? There must be something I can do get it back to the way it was without buying a new video adapter. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated (as you have probably guessed computer hardware is not my forte).
