Until 2 days ago each time I opened Word a new doc opened on the left and a window on the right displayed recent files. I haven't changed anything but the recent file window doesn't display any more. I checked settings and word help without success. Any advice? Word 2002 (XP), SP3.

If you haven't yet, go to Tools > Options, View tab and check the box for Startup Task Pane.

Thanks for responding so quickly. That's the first thing I looked for. The box was checked but the window didn't open. Voodoo software?

Has your system/network admin imposed any group policies restricting the reading pane in Outlook in the last few days? I ran into this problem when using Word XP a few years ago.

When I blocked the use of the reading pane in Outlook it blocked the Task Pane startup in Word XP. The task pane worked fine in Excel XP but wouldn't start up in Word. It didn't matter if Word was or was not being used a the e-mail editor in Outlook.

Cheers.
