receiving icq file transfers and random chat

I am just starting to use my ADSL router. We have tried to receive file transfers and also go into random chat and get a disconnect message. We have confirgured the prefrences to show we are using the LAN, modem option. It still will not let us receive these items.
Can you please tell me if there is anything else we should do in order to do this. On dial-up we could do everything.
