I have linux machine that is my file server & mail. I would like to know the best way to setup to receive/send faxes on my windows machine. I have 56k modem intalled on my linux box only.

First, it is best if your modem is a hardware modem, not a software or win-modem. US Robotics and Zoom make some nice hardware modems. Linux prefers these and they're generally better pieces of gear.

That said, take a look at Hylafax. It's an outstanding package that allows incoming, outgoing, and some integration with your email system itself.

Multitech modems love Linux and Unix and are even SCO certified. They do have trouble with Windows sometimes though. Go here, too:
I found a fantastic site called "Winmodems are not modems."
They have a listing of just about every modem and seem to have tested all of them. Go to
If you go with ISA or external, you should be fine. If the modem seems cheap, it's probably garbage.

Good luck.

That's priceless! That should hang from a banner over every "Best Buy" and "CompUSA" store in the world. Also on the EBay home page...
