Issue:
Receiving E3714 error - starting last week
Unable to backup more than 3+GB of data
No changes to the server were made until after E3714 issue had arose
Software:
AS6.61
AS2k
System: Dual PIII 700/512
Controller: Adaptec AIC-7896
Tape Drive: HP 718 Autoloader
Media: HP DLTtape IV Data Cartridge
Notes:
System has been stable for 2+ years on AS 6.6x
Last week rec’d E3714 error – have not had a successful complete system backup since
Completed the following:
- Checked media reported bad on another HP Autoloader – Media/Backup were successful
- Cleaned tape head of 718 – still rec’d E3714
- Ran Diagnostics on the 718
- Media Validation Test (Reads 125MB from tape)
- Read/Write test (writes and reads 600MB from tape)
- Device Self test
- Device Analysis
All the above test ran successfully
Additional notes:
Backup runs until 3.2 – 3.5GBs of data is backed up then fails w/E3714 error
Rebuilt AS Database – backup failed w/E3714 error after 3+GB is backed up
Tested on different data sets and different partitions – backup fails w/E3714 error after 3+GB is backed up
Tested using from 1 to 12 sessions – backup fails w/E3714 error after 3+GB is backed up (sessions 1-11 were successful and were able to be restore)
(Note after receiving error I would either remove or reformat affected media before starting a new backup. Else the following backup would fail immediately with E6069 and W6906 errors)
Checked the restore option - able to restore data successfully
Proceeded with upgrade to AS2k
Uninstalled AS6.x
Rebooted
Installed AS2k into different directory
Applied service patches
Ran backup – Again backup fails w/E3714 error after 3+GB is backed up
Recap
HP Library and Tape Tools tests and reports thetape drive functioning properly
Tapes that received E3714 error function properly in another autoloader
Backup is successful as long as the sum of all backups is under 3+GB
Restores are successful
Removing old AS6.x and installing AS2k + service patches had No Change
My thoughts
Could this be a problem with AS database, AS tape eng. or the registry??? (System works until 3+GB threshold is reached therefore I don’t believe it’s a problem with the tape drive/hardware as CA reports in their KB)
Thanks
