I have rh7.3 that I operate in command line only. I have
fouled up somewhere. My online research tells me the only way to solve the problem now is to rebuild the kernal.

Never done it before. Can someone point me to a clear easy/step by step how-to?

Maybe I don't need to rebuild? My problem is below:

upon boot I get:
Jul 22 05:12:03 mail2 ifup: Error, some other host already uses address a.b.c.103.
Jul 22 05:12:03 mail2 network: Bringing up interface eth1: failed
)

I have checked /etc/sysconfig/network:
NETWORKING=yes
HOSTNAME=mail2.foo.com
GATEWAY=a.b.c.100
GATEWAYDEV=eth1

I have also checked my /etc/hosts:
# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
127.0.0.1 mail2.foo.com mail localhost.localdomain localhost
#127.0.0.1 tempfoo.com mail localhost.localdomain localhost
#10.10.10.9 mail2.footest.com mail foo.com foo

Any and all help welcome!

Unless you get the "some other host already uses address" error even when you boot the system with the network card unplugged, the problem has nothing to do with your kernel.

If you unplug the Linux box and ping the address in question, do you get a ping response?

If so, the problem is just as the error message describes: Some yahoo on your network has taken it upon himself to put on his workstation the same IP address that your Linux box is using.

With the Linux box unplugged from the network, keep pinging that address as you unplug parts of your network. When the pings begin failing, you'll know you've found the part of the network on which the miscreant's machine resides.

The most simple solutions are indeed the most elegant.

You're a star for saving me a bundle of work. The switch wouldn't let go of an old IP -- Had to force the switch.

Thanks,
