Hello Guys,

I am facing rebooting problem with ultra 60(solaris 2.7).It rebooted frequently and when I checked the /var/adm/messages entry I did not get any error messages.
I was facing same problem with another system but after formatting and reloading a software I am not getting such problem on that system.
This is sure it is problem of OS related or disk related but my current system have a very critical data and I do not want to format and replaced to disk.
If any body have idea please share with me.

thanks
Ajay Kumar

hi ajay,
rebooting is caused mainly due to inconsistent nature of the os like some needy files getting corrupted or deleted,
or mem overflow or a particular sector or data location getting corrupted often on the harddisk that needs formatting as the only solution or specific file/sector
organizing or data recovery utilities which i am not familiar with.
i can only suggest ways that i usually follow
1.try to take up backup of the datas only to another harddisk or tapedrive and format the harddrive and reinstall the os and retrieve the data. (or)
2.if h/w problem it should be a problem with the harddisk or the ram. (or)
3.for ram set the diag-switch=true which shall display the
ram's health/status. (or)
4.if harddisk's problem try replacing the harddisk and watch out for failure's which should not be. (or)
5.check for core dumps and remove them. (or)
6.fsck the entire file systems and if necessary choose a different boot blk. (or)
7.try emptying utmp& wmtx files.
more than this its difficult for me to say as i dont know what sort of applications that are being worked with and the kind of performance tuning that is done on with the kernel files.
good-luck
makir
