Are you getting this error when the system is going down? And is it an error that appears at the command line?
Do you have an /etc/rc.shutdown file that has a command that is failing? That will stop a system from going down. If that is the case, just comment out the line that is failing in the rc.shutdown file.
The error code appears on the LED readout on the front of the server. I have not figured out a way to reboot the system back in to try any debugging. It is not even booting off of the CD in an attempt to reinstall. We are running 5.2. Is there a default password at the white boot up screen? I try to select an option, and it asks for a password that I do not have. It is not the same password associated with root.
Hi bi,
Jeremy and I are working together on this. Any insite would be helpful. On the led readout the second line below the 0777 is VO.1-P1/E1. Does this help at all?
Thanks,

Display Value 777
Explanation Progress indicator. A 10/100 Mbps PCI Ethernet device driver is being identified or configured.
System Action The configuration method is being run. If an irrecoverable error occurs, the system halts.
User Action If the system halts with this value, go to "Hardware Diagnostics" in in AIX Problem Solving Guide and Reference. If these procedures find a problem, report the problem to your hardware service organization. Otherwise, report the problem to your software service organization, and then stop. You have completed these procedures.>
The problem solving .. Guidie is indeed a book. Have you a Diagnostics CD? try running diags against the card that is seemingly reporting the problem.
Otherwise try to start the system with the Ethernet card removed. Bear in mind it may be a card (hardware) fault, a driver fault, or a configuration fault.
We just had this same exact thing happen to us 2 weeks ago and finished working thru it with IBM. It took them quite a while to diagnose the problem. At first, the hardware CE started changing IO boards and service processor boards thinking one was fried.
But, everytime we would try booting up with our 10/100 ethernet card installed, we would get a '0777' LED and the system would stop. We knew the card was good.
Here is what the problem was. We had 4 entries in our ODM definitions that had null value for the 'NAME=' field. We used the odmupdate command to delete this specific lines from the ODM. It turns out that the system was hanging when it was trying to configure the EN0 device while it was running cfgmgr on bootup.
I'll be that just prior to this problem starting, you either migrated up to 5.1 or installed a maintenance level or something similar to this didn't you.
IBM now has a knowledgebase case on this problem on the software support side. The specialist who helped us was 'Ron' and he was a TCP/IP specialist with IBM in Austin.
