Hi, everyone:

I just started working on the NT4 servers. Somebody told me that I should reboot NT box in every two weeks to let system cache clean up a bit. Is this really necessary? Should I do this routinely?

Thanks!

Windows NT4 with the latest service pack which is SP6a should not need to be rebooted so frequently. Sometimes running server software will chew up system resources over time and not return the resources to the operating system. As long as you have enough memory and free hard disk space to allow for the page file rebooting should not be necessary. Every 3-6 months wouldn't hurt. Products like Exchange will keep using memory as it needs to but you can limit the amount of memory Exchage is permitted to use at once. Hope this helps.

I reboot our servers once a week. The reason is primarily to ensure that we are not backing up a system that is unstable or has a problem.

By rebooting before we go completly through a backup tape series, I know that I'm backing up a working environment.
