I have over improved the DNS service and now the reboot hangs after:

"starting rpc services: rpcbind keyserv rpc.nisd ypbind done."

Is there a way to force a single user state boot from a powered down box. The default is state 3.

Sun OS 5.8 - sparc - sun4u

i entered ctrl-C and got option for root password for system maintenace. i will now undo my DNS changes. Hope nobody else gets into a postion to need this info.

i need to restore files in the /etc and the mount is read only. i can not unmount due to a busy caused by /etc/.mnttab.lock . i am stuck and not sure what i can do from here.

You could boot from CDROM, mount the root partitian on /mnt and fix the files in /etc, then reboot.
