This is one of those things I used to know and have not used and forgot. I looked at the man pages for shutdown.

shutdown -y -g:0 -i6 seems to be what I remember.

When I look at the init man page it talks about an entry in inittab and so on. I never touched that before.

Is the above correct or do I need to make that change in inittab to make it work. Right now the inittab line is

is:S:initdefault:

Do I change the S to 2?

I anticipate needing to dial in and reboot a server this weekend.

Hi , if you just want to rebot your machine i saw a mistake in your comman line.

You wrote:
shutdown -y -g:0 -i6
The right command is :

shutdown -y -g0 -i6 , the colon is not an option of the command

Also you do not have to change nothing at the inittab file , you better do not change nothing on that file.

I hope this can help if not let me know @ champetu@gmx.net

Unix rocks all over the world !!!

If you use the command "init 6" it will restart your machine
as well

6 refers to run level 6 "reboot state"

Basically
