Hello all...
I am new to setting up a VPN and need reasons as to why we would need a VPN. The director of IT believes that terminal server is our answer, but I need to convince him that a VPN would be better.
Here is the deal:
We have a central office with a domain server\ finace server + software\ and a few application servers. The office currently has 25 or so users that all collect financial data and compile it all together. They rely on client sites to enter data into a spreadsheet via a PCAnywhere PC or terminal server. NO FIREWALL - just a DSL router acting as DHCP server.
There are 7 off site retail locations each on a workgroup. All locations must use terminal server or PCAnywhere to enter data via a spreadsheet or application. PC's are not on the domain so there is no security. Any and all administration needs to be done on site or via a PCAnywhere connection. If there is any turnover then all user info needs to be manually deleted. All locations use a static DSL connection again no firewall. There will also be a few more locations added within the next few years. I should also mention that the remote sites have 5 or so PC's. I should also mention that the remote sites have 5 or so PC's.
The director thinks that if we do go VPN to go with a VPN appliance that uses a portal rather than utilizing the site to site option.
His big belief is that Terminal server and PCAnywhere PC is the answer and is reluctant to change. He believes that Terminal server removes any network overload and any use of site to site data entry via a worksheet would be slower than what we are doing now.
If anyone can help me out by giving me the benefits of a VPN and how it would improve our current technology, I would GREATLY appreciate it.
Thanks for any and all help.
