Reason to Upgrade Backend from 97?

I currently have a number of backend databases in Access 97 format with Front Ends converted to Access 2003. I am left asking myself is there a reason to upgrade the backends?

The only thing I know for sure is that the 2003 file format is larger and therefore may slow things down over the network.

That would be reason enough not to upgrade but I am I missing something?

Dear lameid,

The one major benefit to upgrading from Access 97 backend to a later version would be the file size itself

Access 97 has a one gig max size.

Access 2000 and later has a 2 gig max size.

If you have a fairly large backend DB, and you do not compact often, then you might reach the 1 gig limit.

When you reach that limit, things just stop and fail.

I would suggest upgrading the backends to Access 2000 format.

That way, you have the larger file size available and yet other applications that may not be Access 2003 ready could still see the Access 2000 data.

Note:
Converting an Access97 frontend to an Access2003 format may indeed increase the Frontend size with code and forms and all.

But, an Access97 backend, that just contains data, will not grow much in size when converted to Access 2000 or newer.

Hope This Helps,
Hap...
