Hi Folks,

I am having issues trying to connect an old Celeron desktop to my Linksys router BEFW11S4 via an old Realtek NIC 8139a I believe.

I have installed the latest driver for the Realtek NIC for Windows 2000 pro and have tried 3 different cat5 network cables, including a crossover cable. I have also tried to use the obtain automatically option as well as static ip addressing as follows:
router ip 192.168.1.1
desktop ip 192.168.1.151, gateway ip 192.168.0.1 for P4 desktop running ICS.

A couple of times I have started up the Celeron desktop and got connected using the obtain automatically option, only to lose connectivity after 1 minute. The LAN icon in my system tray reverts back to 0 packets sent and 0 packets received. In the NIC configuration I have tried 100mps half duplex with out any luck and there doesn't seem to be any power management option. The Realtek NIC driver I am presently using is RTSNT.612, I have tried to connect with the default Realtek NIC driver from my Windows 2000 pro SP2 CD as well with out any success.

I have read in a couple of forums that the Realtek auto detect and the Linksys router auto detect features sometimes clash. I have the lastest firmware for the router so should I look for another driver for the Realtek NIC or have I missed the boat somewhere?

Here's the part that throws me:

192.168.0.1 for P4 desktop running ICS

Why are you running ICS & using a router? You probably have some IP address conficts going on.

Sorry I am running a P4 Desktop with ICS connected to the WLan port of the Linksys router for internet access for two wireless enabled laptops. The Celeron is the kids computer, which I am trying to get connected via the Realtek NIC to the

Linksys router network:
Linksys router ip 192.168.1.1
two laptops with wireless access 192.168.1.100 and 192.168.1.101 both through "obtain automatically"
P4 desktop gateway 192.168.0.1 via WLAN port of router

Trying to connect via wired LAN port of the Linksys router to join network as well as connect to the internet using the P4 desktop gateway. The gateway is working a charm at the moment for the two laptops, but also trying to give the kids access for Neopets.

hope this clears things.

give the celeron a static ip. reboot and do cmd/ipconfig /all, check the result/post it. if things seem ok there do cmd/ping 127.0.0.1 for loopback check. if this is ok the driver/protocol is bound to the nic and you know the problem is the cable/router. now ping router/gateway (by ip/name) and post the result.
by any change have you set mac filtering in the router?

Auto negotiate needs to be disabled on your pc's.
Set them manually to whatever speed they can handle.
I have had this issue, and it worked for me....may not work for you, but the older cards seem to have issues with newer routers/switches and speed negotiation.

I hear and I forget. I see and I remember. I do and I understand.

Hi Follks,

Sorry for the delay responding to your suggestions been busy with car problems lately.

I have tried taking the automatic speed option of the old nic with no luck. I believe it is an issue with the router as I have also uninstalled my wireless adapter from my laptop and attempted to use the ethernet connection with no luck either.

I have tried that before but I will give it another go and post my results to see what you think.

Thanks folks,

Well afer all that the Realtek Nic was the issue. Tried to use my Toshiba laptop ethernet connection with Linksys wireless adapter still active on the network previously and didn't work. But I tried it again on my son's Thinkpad and it worked a charm, so the Realtek nic must be dodgie. I'll pick up a new nic to replace it and I don't think it will be a problem.

Sorry again for the delay but I commute back and forth 90 miles every few days from where I work to the farmhouse where the network resides. As well picked up the Agobot virus on the P4 and took a while to get rid of it.

Thanks again for the suggestions.
