I'm having quite a bit of a problem with a machine that hasn't had sound for weeks. It all started after a storm, when the original onboard audio and NIC quit working. We replaced the original 945GTP motherboard with a 945GCNL, but sound still refuses to work. The onboard audio on both boards have been Realtek AC'97's.

Whenever I open the Sounds and Audio Devices window, no sound device can be found, but if I open Realtek's Sound Manager and play a sample sound, it works just fine. I've never come across anything this wierd. Has anyone else?

Zipster90,

Have you tried visiting the manufacturer's website and downloading the correct drivers for the audio device? The missing entry in Device Manager seems to indicate that a compatible driver is not installed.

See if the Audio Codec is enabled in the BIOS setting [AUTO or ENABLED]...

then reinstall the audio driver... just to be sure...

Uninstall the drivers and then look in add remove programs (show updates and look for KB888111 remove it restart the computer and try installing the drivers again. A successful install will show both the realtek high definition icon in the systray and the speaker icon.
