real time counter using server time

I have an application where the user logs in and the time is stored as a session. What I need to be able to do is countdown 30 minutes from that time for the page to be redirected. It cant be affected by a user clicking refresh. Im stuck and have been toying with all sorts of different combos of javascript and vbscript. Any help or ideas and examples would be appreciated!
