Hello!

I'm currently looking for a way to stop Real Player from automatically downloading updates from their web site. I downloaded the latest version of the free player from the web site. As I started to install it and I actually read the licence agreement (OMG!!) and the part that interested me was this:

AutoUpdate: The RealOne Player, using AutoUpdate, automatically communicates with RN's servers on the Internet to check for updates to RN's and RN partner's software, such as bug fixes, patches, enhanced functions, missing plug-ins and new versions. AutoUpdate also has the capability to run independently of RealOne Player to perform background update checks. RN may download updates during the background checks, when RealOne Player automatically communicates with RN's servers, when you manually check for updates, or when RealOne Player detects a file it does not support. AutoUpdate sends information about installed RealNetworks' products and components to the servers to determine upgrade availability. If you prefer to be notified when an auto-update is performed, follow these steps: On the Tools menu, select Preferences, Automatic Services, AutoUpdate, and then de-select "Automatically download and install software updates." However, as we describe above, certain updates to RealOne Player functionality will happen automatically and without advance notification.

I've been searching the net flat out and can't find a fix. The reason I'm looking is because I work in a government department where we run a locked down version of Win2K. IF we allow Real Player to do it's AutoUpdate thing on Pc's where the user has no rights, then it could cause some horrible problems.

I'm also looking into the possibility of another player that plays .ram files.

Any ideas????

Use Windows Media Player instead.

I would if I could. Unfortunately, Media Player doesn't play RAM files.

Can you convert the files to something other than .RAM? I've hated RealPlayer for a few years now, since they started doing this sort of thing.
Media Player and Winamp are nice alternatives, and Media Player will play (most) anything.

I've tried looking for a converter too but I"ve had no luck. It's a pain that the .ram files can ONLY be played with Real Player. They've really done their homework!! There must be SOMETHING out there......

Hey Doug!

Real Alternative is exactly what I'm looking for!! Thankyou SO SO SO much!!!!

P.S. I"m only new too so I have absolutely no idea how to do links!!!

Bec )

Links are a little dicey, temporarily. The site is going through improvements. Normally, your link would automatically show as such. For the time being, you need to utilize this format...
