So I'm using visual c++ express edition 2008 and I'm trying to learn the basics of using C++ all of the sample programs I download don't build or compile and I'm not sure how the old code of C++ works into the newer gui stuff.

There's a lot of...
this->FormBorderStyle = System::Windows::Forms::FormBorderStyle::FixedDialog;
soft of stuff that I'm not familiar with. Is there a good resource for me to learn how to use this.

That's not regular C++. I believe it's Microsoft's Managed C++, although to be honest I'm not certain.

If you want to do standard C++, you need to make a Win32 Console Application when you first create your project (and check the Empty Project option in the Application Settings page of the wizard).

Then you can use the C++ you're more familiar with.
