reading MAC values

Hi,
I am trying to read MAC address values directlry from interfaces..but rather than getting something sensible like 00:03:1b:blah i get this as the output...

????|

Yuh really this is the output :( any tips?

Maybe some info on how are you actually getting the values and how are you displaying them would be useful ....
