reading .gz compressed files

How do I read an xml file that has been compressed with Unix gzip? I tried using GZIPInputStream but I get errors relating to "unsupported five or six byte UTF-8 sequence".
 
Well i don't know but perhaps the formats are not compatible in which case you would have to either write your own code or search for code/libraries on the net.

If you find something post it here please.
