Reading an open window's Status Bar elements

Suppose I have shelled open HyperTerinal. In the lower left hand corner of the HyterTerminal window's Status Bar, the words 'Connected' or 'Disconnected' tell the status of the connection.

I have automated the connection process and now need to be able to read the 'Connected' or 'Disconnected' value from the Status Bar with VB before proceeding with the VB code.

Does anyone know how I can accomplish that? I'm stumped.
