Reading a Word Doc

I need to extract data from about 500 Word docs written with a template. Does anyone know of a routine that will strip out all of the word formatting?

Thanks feherke. Catdoc seems to do most of what I need, but some strange formatting in the documents are causin sections of the doc to disappear. I'll keep playing with catdoc and see if I can make it work for what I need.
