Reader won't open - "two plug-ins intializing"

dl'd Acrobat Reader 5.1 on HP Pavillion with XP-Pro, because Pdf files wouldn't open. So, now when I try to open a Pdf file I get this "two plug-ins are attempting to register with the same name", and after whacking "OK" a half-dozen times, I get "the plug-in failed to initialize", and Acrobat Reader shuts down. Any remedy for this? TIA
