Reader Crashes Browser on Exit

Using Reader 5.1, IE 6.00 with SP1. I send .pdf files by email often. With my new computer running XP Home, whenever I close the a .pdf file, my Browser locks for about 20 seconds and then shuts down, returning me to my Desktop.
Although there is a workaround for this problem (opening the file outside the Browser) (

it doesn't work for me since I need to send the file by email, then open other files and email them. It gets to be a rather tedious, long, and frustrating process.
Any suggestions?
