Read vs. Unread Messages - strange!!

A strange thing is happening to us. Messages that we open and read, and turn black often turn red again, appearing to be unread. This usually only happens to messages towards the top of the Inbox. Does anyone know why this is happening and how to stop it? Using R5 clients.

We encountered something very similar to this. We use R5 on an IBM AS/400(but it might be the same regardless of platform).

We discovered that the Domino server was "crashing", but intelligently repairing/recovering itself, and using its latest backup copy to do restorations. The result was that items read, and sometimes even deleted, reappeared as "red" mail. The process was so good, human intervention was not really necessary, so we were left out of the information loop initially.

I'm not certain how the server setup works on a non-AS/400 box, but I'd look for logs that might show resets around the time of the mysterious color changes.

Thanks, rdannand! The way you describe it it sounds like
the server can crash without disrupting anyone's work and without them noticing! Where would I look to see if in fact this has been happening? (My boss would know, but he's out of town).
