I have a standard FrontEnd/BackEnd System. It works fine. I have been asked to create a second front end that users could use to create their own queries and reports. Frankly I think this will be a disaster, but I'm a contractor so...
I want this front end to disallow updates. So I need to link the tables read only. I know this can be done, as I did it in 1999, but I can't remember how I did it. I usually do the links in code, but I don't see a parameter that does what I want.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks.

If you have a FE & BE, then you also have security enabled? if not that's the way to go.

I have avoided using MS Security. It is complicated and the users are in tiny towns in the boonies of MA. They have no onsite support and the support they do have, while well meaning, are not too hot.
I'm worried that something will get screwed up and they won't be able to use the main system. To complicate matters further I don't drive. I can't get there to fix things.

That's why I'm looking for another way.

If there are not too many tables, you could consider importing them on open of the reports database, there are some good arguments for using a snapshot position for say, year end reports. I am sure you can think of some more. :)

Most "user queries/report" needs can be met by the Query By Form applet found at
Another method would be to link to the tables and create non-updateable queries. Then hide the tables.
