I'm new to this website but was wondering if anybody was experiencing the same problems as I am with Windows XP on our network.

Most pcs on the network are W2K Pro but we are starting to get more XP boxes. We have installed Service Pack 1 but are finding that when user open files, it comes up as read only - locked by the same user. To try and fix this I obtained a copy of the Read Only Fix from Microsoft, it has helped reduce the number of incidents but it is still occurring from time to time. They said that if it didn't fix the problem then the read only problem wasn't the issue in the first place. The other issues is that when opening files (using Windows Explorer or via the application) it takes an awful long time to open up. It can lock up or simply just take minutes to open. I have reformatted the hard drives and reinstalled XP and all the applications however, yet still experiencing problems with XP. I feel it might just be easier to install Win2K instead but I thought it might be a good idea to wait for Service Pack 2 (that is if the problem is Windows XP).

Is anybody else have any other suggestions/solutions to try and aleviate these problems?

Thanks

Files taking a long time to open may be corrupt, or being unpacked and checked by virus scanners. What type of files are causing this problem?

Here's some ideas for you to look at as far as Read only is concerned.

Cannot Change the Read-Only Attribute of System Folders

HOW TO: Remove the Read-Only Attribute While You Copy Files from a CD-ROM in Windows 2000 (Q323002)

From a Command prompt use the ATTRIB command.
Displays or changes file attributes.
This command displays, sets, or removes the Read-Only, Archive, System, and Hidden attributes assigned to files or directories.

ArcSet -- Win9x, NT4, Win2K, WinME, XP
If you ever copied files from a CD-ROM to your hard drive, you've probably noticed that those files will be set to read-only, preventing you from modifying them. Removing the read-only attribute by hand can get really tedious, especially if you're looking at hundreds or thousands of files. ArcSet is a utility that does the job for you. It can automatically reset file attributes on specified files on a drive or in a folder, even recursing through subfolders.

Thanks very much! I noticed ArchonSoft had this very same problem. Cheers
