Read icon on desktop into bitmap

I need to read all the icons on the desktop, whether it's a file or a shortcut to a file (or program) into a bitmap.

I have searched google but come up empty handed. How do I read the icons (real files or programs And shortcuts to files and programs) into bitmaps in memory?
