Is there a way to directly read and directly write to a burner without using any other drivers to access the drive? I need to backup one of my cousins games. He purchased a new disc because he managed to gouge out a portion of the plastic from the bottom of the disc.

You are far better using pre-written tools for this job.
The CD is a much more complex structure than it first appears and most commercial games are copy protected to some extent.
Also, you might want to check the copyright laws in your country to ensure that you are allowed to make backup copies.

My question still needs answering. I will refuse to use any pre-written applications for backing up. None have worked properly.

Refuse all you like!

I suggest you look at the open source code for some backup tools (like cdrecord and cdrdao) and maybe you'll get an idea of just what you're up against.
You're complaining about tools that take many man-years to create. Do you have that kind of time to invest?
If you do, I wish you luck cos you're gonna need it.

I must say that I would have thought that you might appreciate my advice a little more though rather than just slamming it back in my face.
