This started about a month ago. When I right click
on a shortcut on my desktop, it can take up to 30
seconds before pop up menu displays. It doesn't happen
all of the time, but it does the vast majority.

Any suggestions?

If you have an active desktop then weird stuff like that will happen. In my personal opinion it is less of an issue in 2000 than 98SE. I've seen it bog 98SE down so bad that it was unbearable to use.

I have the exact same problem. I have found that it is only slow opening the dialog box when right-clicking on a shortcut. If I R-Click on a file or program, the box opens instantly. I am using Win 2k-Pro, build 2195: SP4. Active desktop, effects, on or off doesn't make a difference. It also doesn't seem to matter where the shortcut is or where it is pointing to. Selecting the shortcut, then right-clicking doesn't make a difference either.

Any suggestions?

I too have the same issue on my Win2k PCs with SP4 installed. If i build the same PC with SP2 there is no issue. This however is a problem as i need SP4 installed for some of my new apps. Any ideas?

do you all happen to have mapped drives to machines that are offline or no longer exist? This will cause slowdowns for everything from opening my computer to right clicking icons.

I have experienced this also on W2k sp4. Here's some things that can slow it down: When you right click on a folder, does it list things like "Play in Winamp?" (or if you have dBpower Amp converter, etc) Those will slow it down. If you are running anything below a P4 w/ 256m Ram, I would run this free Rambooster utility all the time. I've never had a problem since I've installed it, and it made my right-clicking problem disappear.
