i'm getting the error message, " Reached end of medium " when doing my backups, eventhough the capacity of the tape is enough for the data i'm backing up to fit. WHAT IS WRONG? and How can i fix it?

This could indicate a faulty tape or "dirty" tape drive. Try running a cleaning cartridge first. Also, you can run "tape erase" from the command line to reformat the cartridge. All data on the tape will be lost.

what backup s/w are you using?
I know that if using Microlite's Backup Edge and having an incorrect volume size specified will result in similar message...
are you using cpio - if so, try using the "B" option in your output options string (example: cpio -ocvdumB -O/dev/rStp0) it has resolved this for me in the past...

good luck !

thanks guys! had the tape drive attended to, it initially didn't yealed any results, but on Sunday my backups & restores started going through. but i've got one more question. i've tried backing up onto DISK into a specific directory i have created but i'm getting the message "cannot create" i'm using "cpio -ovcBdum " for the backup, any suggestions.

Not sure if this will help, but because you're using the d option to cpio, you're saying 'create directories as needed'. Are you sure you have appropriate permissions to be able to do this in the area you're backing up to? HTH.

thanks Ken, but i'm still getting the same error even after i remove the d option to cpio
