Try to hack your own site. This forum isn't very friendly to discussions about hacking methods, but there are plenty of resources on the web. Try a google search for common exploits and even ready-made script kiddie tools. Just be very careful that you only gain access to your own account and don't break any laws. If you "accidentally" cause damage, such as a server crash, then you are still at fault.
While on google, you might also try searching for discussions about your host and security concerns. Often if anyone else has had problems, they will vent on discussion forums and newsgroups. While an absence of such talk is not an indication that security is good, lots of it should indicate that it is not.
Alternatively, ask your host directly what kind of security measures they take. But barring the aforementioned hacking method, you'll have to take their word on it.
You can also try researching independent reviews of web hosts to see how yours ranks against others. Sites such as C|Net probably do stuff like that. But only expect your host to be listed if it is a big player.
You'll also tend to be more secure on a UNIX or Linux based system rather than a Windows based system no matter which host you choose. Also, if you have SSH access, you can probe around the system and see what other info you can access. Ideally you'll be in a chroot environment so that you can't see anyone else's data and they can't see yours. But this is heading back toward the hacking method again. Sincerely,
