Re-sizing a cropped image

Dear all,

I've cropped an image using clipping mask. Now I's like to resize the image that's left. I cannot seem to do this, it always re-sizes the original image. In effect, I want to throw away the edges and play with the bit in the middle. Can illustrator do this without exporting as a tiff and importing again?

Just getting to grips with Illustrator, bit annoyed with it currently, hope I like it more as I get better.

try the following:

1. Draw a filled rectangle above the image, or duplicate the clipping mask and isolate it ABOVE everything (move out of the clipping group), fill it with some color, set the opacity to 0%.

2. Select raster image and the above filled shape (0% opacity), then choose Object > Flatten Transparency...

...slide the balance slider to 100 (far right), and make sure the Alpha Channel option is NOT selected.

3. Deselect all, and select the portion you want to keep, release the clipping mask and extract;

4. Discard unused portions.

...to add to my above post, if this is for high end print output you have to be careful with resizing images, making them smaller is generally fine as this increases print resolution, making an image larger in a layout application reduces the resolution and therefore makes bad prints (unless your printing in large format posters, in which case you can get away with lower resolutions, around 100dpi)...

...selecting an image in illustrator displays the PPI value in the top tool bar and also the color psace...
