Primary School network - server has had a number of issues, finally to corrupt to continue - so rebuild. But haven't got all the settings, and have issue with the way workstations are picking up network settings. The school is connected to Local Authority broadband via a router. Internet access is via a proxy server. They also supply 2 DNS server IP addresses. 2k3 server is set as DHCP and DNS server. workstations are picking up IP address, but not resolving names (so can't get on internet nor see for example, printers in the directory) - so I think I need to configure something - probably in the DNS. One symptom is details from running ipconfig on workstation don't include a gateway (they do when its configured right).

I will probably be able to get support for this from the LA tomorrow - but know from experience, may get a bullshitter, and be none the wiser! So, if anybody recognises this situation, help would be appreciated.

1) If you open DHCP Console -> Expand your Scope -> Scope Options, what do you have listed for 003 Router?
2) TCP/IP properties on the server, what do you have listed for primary DNS Server and secondary DNS server (if you have a secondary)?
3) Open DNS Console -> Right-click your DNS Server name -> Properties -> Forwarders tab, do you have your ISP's DNS servers listed here?

Thanks for reply. I'll check those settings tomorrow and get back. I know the second one - the primary and secondary DNS server settings are those supplied by the local authority.

you should be able to set DNS fowarders in your DNS server on the server to those 2 DNS ips that are supplied by the local authority. Then you change the DNS ips for the clients to the DNS server within Active Directory.

unclerico - it was the 003 Router entry (wasn't populated) - so thanks for that.
