hello
A question regarding imaging a HD came up today.
Basically, the question is if a HD is imaged, will emails that I have read be in the image since when they are read (ie retrieved from exch 03 server <not in cached mode>)
they are stored in some temp location on the HD.

One tech said that they would be in the image. I disagree.
I tend to think that when i open an email to view it, it is not stored temporarily in my pc's HD.

can anyone clear this up?

if you have selected "download/remove from server" in your email program, it then resides on your HD - so, yes it will be on the image.

thx for your reply eyec
i'm not sure if i made myself clear but the pc in question is in our office lan on an AD domain
it accesses exchange server thru outlook 2003

my previous post applies to using exchange servers. that is why most Admins limit the total size of your mailboxes because they try to force you to remove "junk" from your accounts to save their server space and to reduce the time backups take.

i do not see that setting anywhere in my outlook
"download/remove from server

sorry, i had it slightly backwards

if you go to Tools, Email Account, View/Change, select your email account name, click on More Settings, Advanced and see if you have the box checked near the bottom that says "leave copy on server".

by default this box is not checked in order to save server space & backup time.

if memory serves me, either way once it is delivered to your email inbox and you open it, it is on your HD and any subsequent images.

That's only for POP3 accounts.

To answer the question, it depends on where mail is stored. If the mail is set to be stored in a mailbox, such as Exchange, then the email won't be in the image. If the mail is set to be stored in Personal Folders (.pst file), then it depends on where that .pst file is. If it's on the workstation, then it will also be in your image. If it's on the server (something Microsoft doesn't recommend, and doesn't support), then it wouldn't be in the image.

Thank you Sniper

I suspected that
I mean, i know that windows tends to keep things in some temp buffer or location but i didn't think it would keep a copy on HD of every email one opens from an exchange mailbox

thx
