Right now i have an ISA 56K Practical Phrepherental modem, if i am to upgrade to an Athlon, most boards either have 1 or none ISA slots, and i have an ISA TV Tuner, so if i were to get stuck with a boards that has only 1, then no prob for my TV tuner, but i would need an updated modem anyways(or if i get DSL anytime soon after i move) as far as USB goes, i only use a self-powered hub, so that none of the USB devices i use(Intelimouse explorer, keningtons VGAcam, ZipUSB100) draw power from the motherboard. As far as my interpretation of reliability, USB is great for input devices, tho i personally wouldnt wana use it for mass storage(better on SCSI), tho, i dont know, does a modem fit in this lower data bandwith that woudl be realible on a USB, or should i just manage to find a board with more PCI slots before picking.
Karl
kb244@bellsouth.net
<a href=
I would stick with PCI for now, especially for modems, since these
are inexpensive, and there seems to be more compatibility problems
with USB than with PCI.
David J. Aller
GoTech@GoTechnologiesInc.com
<a href= Computer Systems & Networking Services
If you are talking about a dial-up modem (56K type or slower), I would also consider an external modem connected to a serial port. If you are hurting for pci slots and irqs, then this is a valid alternative.
Thanks, its what i wanted to know, cuz i figured 56K is rather slow bandwith for almost any kinda interface on the Board, but i was kinda wondering on the reliability of USB.
Karl
kb244@bellsouth.net
<a href=
