Re-Installing XP - destroys existing data? 1

If I install XP to a hard drive that has data on it - it wasn't the system drive before - will the data be destroyed? Or does XP simply make a new directory and install there w/out destroying everything? THANKS!!!!

Is there no way to make a backup?

In any case, it should not destroy the data.
