To make a long story short, I lost boot capabilities (any mode) with my WIN2000, have gone through all of the Repair options which finally entailed replacing a bunch of system files but got stuck with a corrupt registry (SYSTEM at least). I'm now trying a re-install but hoping to save as much of all the other current programs and stuff that I can.

My re-install is on hold at the option to either write over the current WINNT or install brand new in a different folder. The message with the write-over is ominous. Says it will even delete the My Documents folder of all idiotic things! sad Which would be the less troublesome? Or am I just hosed either way?

I do have a direct copy of all files and directories, i.e. not from any backup/restoral program, on a USB flash drive, but I don't know if I can just copy things, like programs and applications, back after my re-install. I don't know which programs require registry entries or how to identify system files that are not Microsoft but from the program.

hi,

the best is to install a fresh copy of OS in the standard
location, without partition disk: you have to be an expert
to boot from partition1 access boot.ini and start os in partition2, many things may be done, but this complicates your life.

If you are sure of copied file, delete partition on setup
and make OS new. Another way is to buy a cheap, new, bigger disk, install OS on it and, after, reconnect your old HD
(in mode that the computer does not boot from it) and
pick your documents from it.

About program, avoid to use those you found on ol OS, excecpt those are done by a single executable: all programs that require a setup, must be installed.

It may delete the files from my documents, but if you install over the WINNT folder it should preserve the applications as they are.

Unless the applications have anything in the corrupt section of the registry.

You could install in another location, but that would generate a dual boot scenario.

If you really don't want to reinstall your applications, then overwriting the WINNT folder is the best choice.

Otherwise a cheap additional drive may be a better option.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.
