Re-Install IE6 1

Hi all,
I am running XP home and loaded a piece of software (since uninstalled) which seems to have corrupted my previously working IE6 (I get 'page cannot be displayed' on various sites).

I wish to re-install IE6 from scratch and am having trouble doing so. When I go into Control Panel--> Add/Remove, the option to repair IE6 is not there.

I used an MS knowledge base article which told me the correct registry key to update to make XP think that IE6 is not installed, re-started windows and downloaded IE6. All was looking good, the download finished and setup began. Unfortunately it then told me that the software I was attempting to install failed the 'OK for XP test' and would not let me go any further.

I have managed to get XP to recognise IE6, but this is not a nice new clean version, but the old corrupted version. I am seriously considering changing browsers to Opera or something similar, but would rather stay with IE as I've used it for years and up to recently have been happy with it. I'd also happily revert to IE5 or similar if that's a possibility.

Any ideas/comments?

Marc

Have you reapplied sp1 to your existing ie6.0?
Any particular site(s) that are giving this error? I take it that some sites load just fine?
Have you swept your pc with something, preferably SpyBot -- get it here: Use this clean off anything nasty that's still iding on your system and confounding your efforts.
Realistically, I've found that the best way to fix a buggered IE6.0 on XP is to reformat and start from scratch, but you really don't want to do that.

I haven't re-applied sp1, but will do so. The sites I don't get are various but, for instance, if I try to get at it flashes up for a second then disappears giving the page not found message. I know this is rubbish 'cos I can get it on my laptop. I've got the zone alarms firewall which as alwys led me to believe that I'm free from this type of thing. Presumably from what you're saying I still need spybot or similar.

Zone alarm is about as adequate as anything else. The problem is, there're many things that attach themselves to a pc anymore that aren't viruses, per se, but have simialr effects on a system. A lot of "legitimate" marketing spyware and such can cause problems of this ilk, hence the need for SpyBot, which is engineered to sniff out and kill such things -- just be sure and keep it updated.
Also -- you may not like this -- but Zone Alarm has been known to cause problems of its own (are you running Zone Alarm on the laptop through which you can hit this site without problems, and if so, is it configured any differently?).
You might try shutting off ZA and seeing if you can view the site without it running.

One more thing...in IE under Help, About Internet Explorer, make sure your cipher strength is showing as 128-bit...

Very strange. I re-applied the IE6 sp1 and also applied an sp1 for XP for good measure. No change. I then decided to install Opera 6 and this also gave me problems on the two sites I could remember I was having problems with. On both and there is a 'book online' bit, which does not work for me under IE6 or Opera 6, but works for me on my laptop which runs Win98 and IE5. I'm now wondering whether it's my XP setup or whether it's these particualr sites.

Does anybody else have problems with these sites?
Marc

Very curious...I handle both sites quite easily (Win98 SE, IE6.0Sp1). You might check under Tools, Internet Options, Privacy, and lower your slider to the bottom. Also, under Advanced, make sure Enable third party browser extensions is checked (this is a long shot). I'll keep checking around to see if anything else is out there...

see thread608-453773 ... looks like it's going around...

I wish it helped! Under IE6 I cleared the cache, cookies, history, everything and then went in under Opera to the easyjet site. It half loaded, then instead of displaying the booking page bit, gave me:

= endOfSeason){ alert(errorMSG['endOfSeason']); errorCount++; return; } if (oDate - currentDate == 0) { if (!confirm(errorMSG['DepartToday'])) { errorCount++; return; } } if ( (document.step1.rDay.selectedIndex != 0) && (document.step1.rMonYear.selectedIndex != 0) ) { var rYear = document.step1.rMonYear.options[document.step1.rMonYear.selectedIndex].value.substring(2,6); var rMonth = (document.step1.rMonYear.options[document.step1.rMonYear.selec

Now I'm not sure what language this is although it looks like either Javascript or VB to me. I'm now wondering if somewhere alng the way my machine's ability to process these languages has got corrupt.

I wonder if you're not having problems processing Java. I've heard that IE6.0 "out of the box" doesn't process it readily. Search for and download MS JVM or Sun's version and see if this might help. (This was offered by Mulga as a solution on a similar post in the WIn9x forum.)

Carrr, many thanks for your help and suggestions. I've kind of given up as it only affects a minimal number of sites, and I can always use my laptop! I've re-installed just about everything I can, applying service packs, updates, clearing caches, history and everything and more that I (and more to the point you) can think of. All is ultimately fruitless and it's an error that I think I'm just going to have to live with. Thanks again, and have a star.
Marc

No problem.
Wish I could come up with a resolution.
I suspect we'll see a SP 2 for IE 6.0 in the near future, as there are still problems popping up. Maybe it will bring your solution. And, if I do run across anything new, I'll post back, so keep this thread marked.
