Re-install but don't replace?

I am trying to install a documentation files, and it doesn't tell me how much space I need, so I run out of space before the application is complete.

After changing the filesystem size, how do I (from the command line) install without replacing the files that are already installed? Is this a good idea? If possible, I'd like to skip those already installed, and go straight to what's left.

It would probably take a lot more time figuring out how than to just drop what's already installed and redo the complete set of documentation files.

What exactly are you installing? Is it an AIX fileset? Or are you just tar-extracting a directory with its contents? Did you use smit/smitty install? If so you may have to "Clean Up After a Failed or Interrupted Installation" first. This you can find under smit install -> Software Maintenance and Utilities - or use the command

installp -C

to cleanup (aforementioned smit option does exactly the same)

Note: smitty invokes the terminal-version of smit which I prefer to the GUI type smit when invoked from DCE/dtterm.

I already untarred and unzipped the contents, and am installing software (using smit) from one of the extracted folders. Instead of picking a device from the list, I type in the path.

It is only failing because I don't have the filespace, and it (for some reason) won't resize the filesystem, as most of my other installs seem to do. (and it doesn't tell me how much space that I need)
