I am relatively new to cisco and am having problems saving my configuration. Everytime i configure up my router and issue the save running-config to startup config, and if i power the router down and up again, all of the configuration is lost. Can anybody help on this one ?

is your

"copy run start" command successful?

or command "wr"?

What does it say after the commands?

Thanks for the reply. The command is successful but upon powering down/up, nothing is saved.

Your config register should be 0x2102. If its not, get into enable enter:

router# config t
router(config)# configuration register 0x2102
router(config)# ^z
router# wr

Then re-enter your running configuration and do the save as described earlier.

Thanks for your help silverhairb! That has worked and my configs are now saving. Any reason why i had to enter this command for the config register. As mentioned im still learning the world of cisco and it seems i have a pretty long way to go! This router was purchased off the internet second-hand and is just being used for lab work, not sure if anybody who done some previous work on it, which might have something to do with it!

Correct. Someone changed it previous to you owning it. 2102 is standard. I wasn't aware that you could bypass the startup config and still load the ios. Good to know.

More than likey, the seller decided to "clear" the router by just not loading the startup config at boot time. That doesn't mean the startup config wasn't actually saved in NVRAM (flash), it just means that the router was set to load the IOS (basically the operating system) without loading the configuration.

I would have done a copy start run to see what config was maybe still in NVRAM...

And then you would have gained the logon IDs hacked their passwords. You could even offer to sell them back along with their firewall filters and ACLs. (LOL)
