I have a customer which we took over (BCM 3.6). The only known
password limits what you can do. We tried to add a keycode today
and the message indicated that 'no authorization'.

We can't get into the 'user management' section to access the
passwords.

Is there a way to reset or find the passswords without erasing any
programming on the harddrive? Can you use debug to crack the
password?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

PS The previous company will not release the passwords.

There are only 2 seasons in Canada, Golf and Snowmobile season.

I think your only option (short of Ace's suggestion) would be to contact ITAS and see if there is any way they can reset the password through VNC. Otherwise, you may need to replace the hard drive and reprogram (voicemail, IP applications and reapply keycodes) - telephony programming stays on the MSC. If you can't get the keycodes through KRS (sometimes you can, sometimes you can't if you weren't the distributor who generated them), you can have ITAS pull them for you. If you have access to the command line (don't know if you do or not), you can pull the keycodehistory.kif file and get the keycodes that way.

If I were the customer I'd be raising holy hell with the previous vendor - provided your customer purchased the system outright, there is no reason that they shouldn't have the passwords.

I have seen that Nortel have the database entrys on the system for unified manager. They have left a copy renamed as .org. I wondered if you renamed these to the correct extension would this reset the access password to unified manager.I can not remember exactly were the file is but I will have a look. I would suspect you would need the hard drive in a PC to access the file and rename.

I know how to reset the password for ee_admin but I do not know what the password is reset too.I thought it was reset to the system ID but I have tried this and does not work

Please forgive my ignorance biv323, but when you say
'reset the password through VNC', what do you mean?

I come from a telephone background and am limited on
computer networking knowledge, so I'm not sure what
you mean by VNC.

By the way, the reason that the previous company won't
give the password is that there is a dispute over an
unfair and unpaid bill due to them. That's between those
two to 'duke it out'. I just want to restore the password
to give me back full access.

The VNC access the Biv is talking about is set up as a last resort to gain access to a BCM system. This allows you to make changes to the NT platform running in the backgound.

I have a FAQ on my website that narsbars wrote you can have a look at

Yeah I think they use the VNC and change the database files I was talking about above. They have the orignal files in the same file. But they have the wrong file extension. I think they rename these to the correct file extension replacing the orignal ones.

Or there is a command line in the BCM alternative O.S to reset the ee_admin password to something then they change it.

I think it's only far. In Nortel-land a customer can very easily go from vendor to vendor without paying. It's not far to the vendor. If the customer wants their password, then they should call their old vendor, fix the payment situation and make them change the password.

Anyone can call Nortel and Nortel will just change it. If it was Mitel, Mitel would call the old vendor and ask them if they owe anything. If they do, it's up to the customer to solve the problem. Once, the customer has cleared up the issues, Mitel will change the password.

I know people don't agree. But if the customer get's a quote and signs, they know what they are getting themselves into ($$$ wise). If the interconnect does not follow the quote, then Nortel should step in and make it far for both parties.

I understand the vendor position but you also have customers that have flat out lost their password and not everyone can just call up Nortel and have the password reset. Perfectly reputable vendors of the Nortel product line are not "Authorized" vendors.

Notel has historically made SOME way of getting back or defaulting their programming passwords. My wondering is why isn't that the case with the BCM?

mroberts You can do it with the BCM its just a case of the people that do know have signed the official secrets act & sleep with a cynide pill under the pillow (ok a bit over the top but their just not telling anyone) get my point.

To answer MROBERTS - I think your answer to why Nortel hasn't made it easy to reset is "GREY. MARKET." Plain and simple. The grey market hurts us dealers. BIG TIME!
