Hardware or software? -----------------------------------------------------

Don't have to reactivate mirroring in hardware raid. The other drive will automatically regenrate itself as soon as it is introduced to the server.

does the 2 HDD need to have the same number of partitions?

It doesn't matter. In hardware mirroring, the second disk will become a perfect copy of the other and will also have an active full MBR with the EISA partition.

For example:
Scenario: Drive mirror, 2 HD, Both drives hotpluggable.
You have a two drive mirror and the secondary drive fails, a red LED(Ultra2 drive) will come on. You yank the drive out and replace it with a new one. The OS is not aware of anything the whole time. Just make sure the drive you insert is a good one and now a failed one. The drive will rebuild on its own and finish up. If you want to look at the status of the drive rebuild, you can run the Array configuration utility from the smart start of download it; there will be a counter on the bottom right hand corner signalling the rebuild process.
You don't have to make sure about the partitioning information or anything like that as hardware mirroring, unlike software mirroring, won't care what is the parititoning information on the drive. The drive will get written over regardless of what is on there.

That is the basic rebuild process of a Hardware mirrored drive. This saves a lot of headache and helps save a lot of time. If you have anymore questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I hope I made sense.

:)
