Hi Folks,

Just wanted a second opinion as we have just purchased 9gb SCSI hot/swap hard disk and 1 gb RAM with adapter to upgrade our F50 server.

I was told by our hardware agency that to install the hard disk is easy and that there is no need to shut down the server. Is that true? I am a bit nervous when it comes to hardware that is why I am happy to install hard disk, as for the RAM memory the network manager said he will do it.

I need to check, after installing RAM is there any configuring tasks I need to do i.e. to update cfgmgr?

Thanking you all in advance.

Cheers

Katherine

You can hot plug the drive with no probelms. The memory will have to go in a specific slot but AIX will configure automatically. You should up your paging space afterward since paging space should be approx 200% of physical memory.

Paging space doesn't need to be 200% of your RAM in a lot of cases. This is dependent on your application memory usage & requirments.
We run a DB with only about 200 users, the system has 2 Gig RAM and we have 2 Gig of paging with an average paging usage of 50%, 60% max. So maybe start at the IBM recomended level (RAM +1024bytes, I think), monitor and increase if/when required.
Hope this helps. Adrian

Hi Adrian,

It alway helps to hear how other users deal with situations like this as I am the only person here with AIX and oracle experience (still learning AIX !).

I plan to install RAM sometime this week and increase paging slightly but will monitor its performance.

Many thanks to you all for your great inputs.

Much appreciated.

Regards

Katherine
