I was not sure where to create this thread, since we use Windows 7 I figured the Windows 7 forum was the best place.

The company I work for uses Quick Books (currently version 13), running on Server 2003 and in a domain. Up to this point all desktops, servers and users have been on the same LAN so their has not been an issue.

However, management wants to relocate the servers to not only a different building and LAN but a different city all together. To solve the issue of data access I am creating virtual machines to install Windows 7 for RDP access. I will be using VMware on a new system that I ordered yesterday. I know I could just get terminal server licenses but I also know that the company I work for would not go for that expense.

The one problem I have not been able to solve to my satisfaction is the issue of printing from Quick Books, particularly paychecks.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to securely print over RDP. I know I could create a VPN and print that way, or get a printer with eprint etc. I just am not sure they would be the best option or the most secure.

Creating a VPN would create another step for connecting users, and I am not sure if eprint would work well for printing multiple checks in Quick Books. If eprint would work does anybody know of a printer I could configure a gmail address with, at least gmail would be encrypted. Are their any reliable third party app?

I need to minimize the cost as much as possible.

Thank You

Is the printer connected to the server and also be relocating?

Chris.

Their are no printers connected to the server, or virtual machines

The printer is connected to the system being used to remote into the virtual machine.

According to the article below, the printers on the local system (system where the RDP session was established from) should be available on the remote side (system where the RDP session was connected to). However I tried what the article said, in fact the settings in the article were defaults. The only printer that could be seen was Microsoft XPS Document Writer (from my note-book name)

Should it matter that the actual physical printers are network printers?

For remote printing to work, the drivers for the local printer need to be installed on the remote computer.
