RDP and Graphics cards

We've got a little debate in the office as to whether RDP uses the graphics card. I'm saying no because I've been able to RDP to machines with non-working graphics cards. Others in the office are saying yes because the graphics card fan goes crazy when people RDP into their machines.

Does anyone know?

It depends on what work is being done on the host machine.

e.g. if someone is connecting to a machine and is doing a video rendering then yes the gpu will work at full capacity and the fan will go crazy.

Depends on the OS at the remote end, and on whether RemoteFX is enabled, and on the RemoteFX settings, and whether your GPU supports RemoteFX. By default, RDP uses a virtual graphics device at the remote end; it'll work quite happily even if there is no GPU whatsoever at the remote end.
