Hi.

Environment: NetWare 5 (patched current) network
Windows 98/2000Pro workstations (patched current)

Question: I recently upgraded my workstation from Windows 98SE to Win2K Pro. Under the Win98 OS I could run "RCONSOLE" from the RUN command line and log into my NetWare servers and, after clicking on the "numlock" key, use the "plus" and "minus" keys to navigate the console screens or use the "ALT" + "F-keys" to do the same. After upgrading to Win2K Pro I can open and log into my servers the same way, but neither the "ALT-F" key combinations or the "plus/minus" keys work. Thus I can only "see" the first screen that comes up.

Anyone have any ideas/suggestions on how to solve this problem?

TIA!

Mark

Best thing to do is to enable your NetWare 5.x server to use RconsoleJ. To do this, execute the following at the server console and add it to the AUTOEXEC.NCF (both RConsole and RConsoleJ can be loaded at the same time so there is no need to disable normal RConsole):

RCONAG6 password 2034 16800

Note: the RConsoleJ password is case sensitive.

To access the server now, run SYS:pUBLIC\MGMT\CONSOLEONE\1.2\RCONJ.EXE - note: this has to be run from a mapped drive (i.e. Z:) and not via UNC. -----------------------------------------------------

Hi,

You can also add the following to the autoexec for secured connections:

RCONAG6 password 2034 16800 2036

Lou

Thanks for the responses.

To test RCONJ, I loaded RCONAG6 password 2034 16800 at the server console and all seemed to load ok:

Server: RCONAG6 LISTEN /dev/nspx <machine address>:16800
Server: RCONAG6 LISTEN /dev/tcp <IP Address>:2034
IP Remote Console Service Registered

I then mapped a drive to RCONJ.EXE (sys\public\mgmt\consoleone\1.2) and tried to run it.

All that happens is that a DOS screen flashes for an instant (blank) and then closes. Nothing else.

Any suggestions as to why this is happening? I have full admin rights to all files/folders.

TIA

Mark

Hi,

The same happens to me. It seems to work when I create a shortcut to it.

Hi Lou.

Thanks for the hint. Tried your suggestion with no luck.
Will keep trying and post anything I find out.
Any other suggestions anyone?

T (again) IA for everyone's help.

Me again.

On a suggestion from another source, I downloaded "RCONIP". This one seemingly opens ok with a "getting server list" message. When finished, it shows the "Available Servers" box. What's funny is the only available "server" showing isn't even a server. It's a partition on my file server. I then created a batch file to run RCONIP with switches (RCONIP <server IP addy> )to point to my file server. When I run the batch file it prompts me for a password. I enter the password and it rejects it each time. I know this password is fine because I can run the old RCONSOLE program using the "rejected" password and it connects fine ( I just can't navigate as the <ALT>+ <F keys> combination OR "+" / "-" keys don't work at all, which prompted this thread in the first place).

I'm starting to become very frustrated and hope you fine folks will be able to help me solve this mystery.

Thanks again!

Mark

P.S. Sorry for the rambling.

Hi again Mark,

Try running it from a DOS window and see if you get an error. That is most likely what is happening but you don't get to see it because the window closes too fast. If you do get an error, check the Novell support site for fixes.

I have my Z: map rooted to SYS:pUBLIC on my file server and I just have a shortcut running Z:\MGMT\CONSOLEONE\1.2\RCONJ.EXE with a working directory of the same path. -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"

Just like NWAdmin, I've always had better luck (ok performance) if I copy ConsoleOne and RCONJ to my C:\ drive and run them from there. At one point, about a year or so ago now, there was a patch for RCONJ, might want to look at one of the service packs for the server.

Thanks lerdalt, I'll certainly do that!

Lou. I opened a command prompt and navigated to the RCONJ directory and attempted to run it in DOS like you suggested. No screen opened. The only thing that happened was a message appearing that said, "The operation completed successfully.". That's it. Nothing else. This is becoming more and more frustrating but I'm becoming extremely anal-retentive about it will continue to play with it until I get it working.

Thanks again for everyone's help and please don't stop with your comments and suggestions!

All right, folks.

Here's MY solution. I stumbled across a website that offers a FREE remote console that works perfectly. It's called, "ADREM Free Remote Console".
The install was absolutely painless and takes maybe 20 seconds. All servers were found instantly and navigation is awesome.

Thanks again for everyone's advice/help and I would strongly recommend that everyone having RCONSOLE issues take a look at this product.

Mark your problem with RCONIP - have you got a line in your autoexec.ncf something like:

RCONAG6 <blahblah> 2034 16800

If you don't then you won't get a connection with either RCONJ or RCONIP.

I have to say that I've moved totally to using RCONIP now - it's quicker than RCONJ to load and respond, and more robust than RCONSOLE over IPX/SPX.

My only complaint about it is that the screen doesn't refresh often enough for my liking - although now I've realised that it's easy to work around.

Hi Quilted....RCONAG6 is loaded, etc, but I'm satisfied with the ADREM Free Console. Works perfectly so far.

Thanks again for everyone's advice and suggestions. I'm still interested in why RCONSOLE,RCONJ, or RCONIP wouldn't work properly, but as long as the Free Console works, then this has basically become a non-issue.

I recently discovered this one also...works perfectly every time. Much better than RCONSOLE.
