I do see some online rating where members or visitors can rate articles(and stuffs like that). Any idea of how this works?I need it for some stuffs.

Sure.

You might use a form control (radio buttons, select drop down are the two I most often see used) to select your rating on the HTML page. This is then submitted (via regular form submission, maybe via an iframe or via an AJAX object) and the data is extracted server-side. Then the data is put into a data source (again, server-side).

Often sites will then display the overall aggregate of votes by querying the data-source and formatting some markup to be sent to the client again.
